Taxes

A mandatory tourist tax of €2.50 per night per person applies (that’s €25 per person in total for 10 nights). This environmental tax is imposed by the Icelandic authorities.

  • New road tax (starting January 2026)

Starting January 1, 2026, Iceland will introduce a new road tax for all vehicles. The estimated amount is about €0.05 per kilometer traveled, which is approximately €10 per day. The final amounts will be confirmed by the end of 2025.

Important: This new tax will be offset by a decrease in fuel taxes. So your total travel cost will remain similar.

Food and drinks

During your route through Iceland, you have three meal options:

  • Cook your own meals using the cooking gear provided in your vehicle and shop for local ingredients along the way (we’ll share tips for supermarkets and great food stops).
  • Opt for a food pack for extra convenience: all your meals are included, with easy and quick-to-prepare options.
  • Discover the local cuisine at restaurants: we recommend in your road book, perfect for tasting authentic Icelandic dishes.

You can also choose to combine different options. Opt for 1 foodpack to share and discover the local cuisine.

FAQ

Here are some of our frequently asked questions. Couldn’t find your answer? Don’t hesitate to send us an email.

What documents do I need to travel to Iceland?
  • An international passport that is valid for at least 6 months after your trip or a valid European ID card.
  • A national, European, or international driver's license.
How old do I need to be to drive in Iceland?

For your trip through Iceland , you must be at least 21 years old and have held a driver's license for 2 years to be allowed to drive a car.

What’s in the roadbook?

Our roadbook contains all the information you need for a successful road trip in Iceland.

It includes the complete itinerary, featuring all the hotspots and hidden gems that you won't find in big travel guides. The places we recommend are always suggestions: you can choose which sights to visit and how much time to spend at each.

Additionally, our roadbook also features various great spots where you can grab something to eat or drink.

What does the foodpack consist of?

Our food pack includes freeze-dried meals that only require hot water, as well as ingredients for you to cook your own meals.

We offer both a vegetarian option and an option with meat. Each pack contains three meals per person per day for the full duration of your road trip (7 days).

Please note that the food pack is not suitable for people with allergies or those following a strict diet, as it may contain traces of peanuts, gluten, and other allergens.

With how many people can you take this road trip?

Iceland Nomads is specially designed for groups of 2 or 3 people.

If you are 3, we provide an extra ground tent and the necessary camping gear (mattress, sleeping bag, and pillow), as the rooftop tent is only big enough for two people.

Want to go with more than 3 people? That's possible, but you'll need to form several small groups. Each group must register separately and will be assigned its own vehicle. Feel free to contact us in advance to check availability.

Can I do this road trip alone?

Unfortunately, our road trip is not designed for solo travelers, mainly due to the long distances to cover. That's why we recommend traveling with at least 2 people.

Additionally, prices are always calculated based on 2 people. It is possible to do the road trip alone, but in that case, you will have to pay double the base price.

What are the extra costs?
  • Icelandic tourist tax: €25 per person.
  • Road tax: around €10 per day.
  • Fuel: approximately €400 for the entire trip.
  • Food and drink: more info above.
  • Parking: in cities or tourist sites.
How does the payment process work?

Within 5 days of your registration, you will need to pay a 35% deposit to confirm your road trip. After that, you have until 45 days before departure to change your options and pay the remaining amount. If you make any changes, the deposit will be automatically recalculated.

If you haven’t opted for the damage coverage, you’ll also need to pay a security deposit before departure (more information can be found in the insurance section).

There are various payment options. Did your payment fail? There might have been an error when entering the reference number, or you may have exceeded your account limit.

Can I still cancel my trip?

You can always cancel your road trip. Here you can find the terms and conditions. Additionally, you can also rely on the Superflex cancellation conditions until 1/03/2026.

We would like to come with our children, is that possible?

You can travel with your children, as long as you don't exceed the number of 3 people per car.

From our experience, we know that with the luggage and equipment we provide (cooking gear, table, chairs, sleeping bags, etc.), it is not comfortable to travel with 2 adults and 3 children in the same car.

For the younger children, we suggest they sleep in the rooftop tent between their parents. For children over 8 years old, we will provide an additional ground tent.

Can I customize the trip to my liking?

We offer a fully planned 7 or 10-days road trip through Iceland, which means it’s not possible to adjust the duration or itinerary of the trip. However, you’re of course free to extend your trip on your own initiative.

Is there on-site support?

Upon your arrival in Iceland, you will be warmly welcomed by our on-site rangers. They will greet you and provide you with a brief explanation before you begin your 10-day road trip.

During your journey, you will find all the useful information in our app. Additionally, just before your departure, you will gain access to a WhatsApp group with all the participants leaving on the same date. In this group, you can communicate with each other, and someone from the team will also be available in case of an emergency.

Do you want to do your part for nature?

Through our partnership with Greentripper, you can offset the CO2 emissions from your trip. Your contribution goes to the certified Wildlife Cambodia project, which protects various forests and the wild animals living there. Additionally, Travelbase also contributes to every donation.
